This E-Lecture introduces a 2nd-order Adjoint Truncated Newton Approach to Time-domain Multiparameter Full Waveform Inversion in Viscoacoustic Medium. A truncated Newton method for time-domain full waveform inversion in visco-acoustic medium is developed
using 2nd-order adjoint state formulation. Time-domain gradient and Hessian-vector product are built by recomputing the incident and adjoint wavefields. After the design of an efficient preconditioner, the importance of the inverse Hessian for mitigating
inter-parameter trade-off is validated on a toy example. A realistic 2D synthetic mimicking North-sea real data application demonstrates that considering Hessian influence significantly improves the multi-parameter reconstruction, for a reasonable
increase of the computational cost compared to standard quasi-Newton method.
