Volume of Shale - Gamma Ray Log

Volume of shale (VSH) is an important first step in log analysis to evaluate a formation’s ability to produce hydrocarbons. Volume of shale is typically high in non-reservoir quality rock and low in potential reservoir quality rock. This simulation allows you to calculate a basic volume of shale using an environmentally corrected series of Gamma Ray (GR) logs.

Learning Outcomes
  • Establishing volume of shale from linear and non-linear equations.
  • Understanding the importance and variable outcomes caused by varying the GR clean and GR shale equation inputs.
  • Recognize the impact of the selected equation on the potential reservoir quality thickness estimation.
