In this E-Lecture: "Cracking Open the Black Box - Making sense of Machine Learning and Neural Networks", Machine learning in geoscience has made a strong return recently, being applied across all disciplines in geoscience. In this presentation Jesper Dramsch presents the basic concepts of machine learning and goes into detail why it is so popular. They then go on to explain how it is applied and how we can gain scientific insights from these blackbox models and start including domain knowledge and physical properties in these machine learning systems.
